“Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him” (Matthew 2:1-2). These wise men (BC 4) knew from Daniel the Prophet (BC 600), the original wise man from the east, that the Messiah of the Jews was due; Daniel 9:24-27 gives the timing. Daniel had, in the east, i.e. Babylon, the scriptures that foretold a great deal about Messiah (cf Dan 9:2). Of them Jesus said, “These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me” (Luke 24:44). Consequently the wise men could have known, as Daniel knew, that the seed of woman would bruise the Serpent's head, be from the tribe of Judah, sit on the throne of King David, be the begotten Son of God, be born of a virgin, be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father; that he would be a rejected cornerstone in Zion, and that he would die for the iniquity of the world (Gen 3:15, 49:10, 2Sam 7:16, Psalm 2:7, Isaiah 7:13-14, 9:6-7, 8:14, 28:16, 53:6).

Oh, if this world today only knew that much about the blessed Saviour born in the barn that day. Wise men still seek him. Wise men still see him in the scriptures. Wise men still worship him. Wise men unceasingly talk of him, the one who saved their soul from hell, the greatest gift ever given, our Lord Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas.
