Msg #2050 The First Advent of Christ - Shepherds

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

God chose shepherds to be the heralds of his birth; they had time, curiosity, initiative, connections and the gospel. “And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds” (Luke 2:17-18). Shepherds led sheep to pasture and came to be called pastors. A sheep needs a pastor, God says so. “Let the LORD... set a man over the congregation... that the congregation of the LORD be not as a sheep which have no shepherd” (Num 27:16-17). In God's economy Christians are to belong to a church so that their light is set in a candlestick, and their pastor ministers to them; “And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD” (Jer 23:4). God gives solemn warning to pastors (Jer 23:1-2) and it is serious; “Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard.... My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds have caused them to go astray...” (Jer 12:10, 50:6). Ezekiel 34 shows previous shepherds failed seven ways; 1) should not the shepherds feed the flocks? 2) The diseased have ye not strengthened, 3) neither have ye healed that which was sick, 4) neither have ye bound up that which was broken, 5) neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, 6) neither have ye sought that which was lost; 7) yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them (Ezek 34:2,4,6). Shepherds are held to a higher standard, you need one, so,... pray for yours.
