What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

The last Sunday of this year calls for genuine encouragement for Bible believers and that can come by learning “It's Amazing What Praising Can Do.” No less than twenty-four verses command us “Praise ye the LORD.” The steps down and away from God are listed in Romans 1:20, “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful...” ergo the top two steps back to God are giving thanks and praising God's glory. Praising God cures a multitude of maladies; it actually changes one's brain chemistry. It can cure depression without meds. Depression is a complicated illness, talk therapy the most robust cure, and God says praising his holy name is a most powerful talk therapy. Praising is a cure for grief. Job said, “the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” At the death of his son David said, “I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me. ... Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever” (2Sam 12:23, Psalm 106:1). It's a cure for anxiety, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.... Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.... In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1Pe5:7,Php4:6, 1Th 5:18).

It is amazing what praising will do. It gives victory over addictions, anger management, and broken relationships. The Bible says fifteen times “Bless the LORD”, and eight times it touches health, “I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance.” Praise his holy name and have a joyous new year.
