God does not waste jots-n-tittles when he writes the Hebrew Scripture, and he hits his Psalmists 71 times with a “Selah” (16 two-Selah Psalms, 6 three-Selah Psalms, (Habakkuk 3 also), and Psalm 89 is a four-Selah Psalm, go figure!). Some suppose “Selah” is a kind of musical rest, more suppose it means to “ponder that.” I suppose the 1970s captured it in the phrase “Go Figure!” The Apostle John wrote in Greek and did not write the Hebrew word “Selah” in 1^st John 3, but his first verse is a three-Selah sentence. It might look like “Behold what manner of love the father has bestowed upon us (Selah) that we should be called the sons of God (Selah): therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not (Selah). The aged Apostle John is writing to “My little children” “that your joy may be full,” and has here given three things worth pondering. He had said “God SO loved”, and next chapter wrote “God is love.” Both help us to “behold what manner of love he has!” The Lord loved Israel with an everlasting love (Jer.31:3) not because they were a great nation but because God is love (Deut.7:7-8a). He loves you, not like “How do I love thee, let me count the whys”, but because God is love! He has innumerable “precious thoughts” for you (Ps.139:13). Behold, selah, and ponder.

Then there's “that we should be called the sons of God” (Selah) attached to, “Beloved, NOW are we the sons of God” (vr.2). By the “Spirit of adoption, … we cry, Abba, Father … And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ” (Rom.8:15b,17a). Selah. And there's still “the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not (Selah). Go figure, and God bless.
