Temple Baptist Church - 5-2-20182 Peter 2:9Introduction: A. Tonight, I want to look at an interesting verse. First, let us put it in its context.1. False teachers have always had an adverse influence upon God's children.a) Satan deceived Eve and Adam followed her lead in eating the forbidden fruit. God delivered Adam and Eve through the shedding of blood.b) From Adam to Noah's day, Satan continued his work until God destroyed the world by a flood but delivered Noah's family.B. In Genesis 19, God purposes to destroy the cities of the plain because of their wickedness. Abraham pleaded with the Lord to spare the cities for the “righteous” sake but ended his bargaining too quickly with the number 10. He thought that there were 10 righteous because of the number in Lot's family.(Lot, his wife, and two virgin daughters are mentioned in Genesis 19:8. This makes 4. In Genesis 19:12, there is the mention of “sons” plural so we know that there were at least two sons living in Sodom. That brings the total to 4+2 which is 6. In Genesis 19:14, it mentions “sons in law” that married his “daughters” so we know that there at least 4 more there. 4+2+4 = 10. Abraham was wrong because he though that they all would be righteous. They were not!)C. The angels were sent to Sodom because God could not destroy the righteous with the wicked.Genesis 19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.Genesis 19:22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.D. The angels had to forcibly remove Lot, his wife, and two daughters from Sodom.1 Thessalonians 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,E. Our text speaks of delivering the “godly” from temptations. God's children face temptations every day. We, that are saved, are in a constant war with our flesh but most us still can overcome the flesh and live godly lives. 1. Thank God for His longsuffering and grace.2. Thank God for His mercy and forgiveness.3. Thank the God for His great love that causes Him to be better to us than we deserve.F. But, there are some believers who are entangled in sin, never get victory, and eventually just give in to it. At that point, God must deliver them.1. God may take you home when you harden your neck against His wooing. Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.2. God may take you home when you rebel against legitimate church discipline. 1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.3. God may take you home when you partake of the Lord's Supper unworthily. 1 Corinthians 11:30-32 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. (31) For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. (32) But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.4. God may take you home when you have committed a sin unto death. 1 John 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. (These are sins that the Bible places a death sentence upon.)G. Why God had to deliver Lot:1. Lot was Willful. “For that righteous man” He was just, righteous, and godly. He was saved and knew better.Genesis 13:12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.2. Lot was Warned. “dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing”Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly. (This was no surprise to Lot! He knew in advance what awaited him in Sodom.)3. Lot was Worn. “vexed his righteous soul” Vexed means to “wear down” Genesis 19:7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. (Can't you hear Lot pleading with the sodomites?)4. Lot was Worsening. “from day to day with their unlawful deeds” Things were not going to get better or change. Genesis 19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.Conclusion: Lot left God no choice. 2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
Temple Baptist Church - 3-21-20182 Peter 2:4Introduction: A. Last week, we looked at the “many” who choose to follow these false teachers. The god of this world, Satan, has been deceiving from the very beginning. He led a rebellion against God in heaven before he beguiled Eve in the Garden of Eden. He has blinded the minds of angels and men over the millenniums and continues to do so in our day.B. Our text gives three specific examples of deception in those who follow error: the angels, those in Noah's day, and those in Lot's day. When prophesying about the end-time and its conditions, our Lord also spoke of these three examples. They lead us to 3 reasons that people reject the God, the Bible, and sound doctrine.1. Because people do not like Authority. If He is God, and He is, then He is to be loved and followed. Thus, the mention of Angels. People do not like a Final Authority found in the Bible. 2. Because people do not like Godliness that genders Loneliness. If they follow God, they may have to follow God alone. Thus, Noah's Day.3. Because people do not like Distinction. If it is God's Word, it is to be believed—not debated. True Christianity demands Separation and Distinction. Thus, Lot's Day. Lot called the Sodomites brethren.C. Speaking in context of a judgment that lingered not, the Holy Ghost takes us back now to the beginning and shows God's dealings with sin. 1. This is both an interesting verse of Scripture and a controversial one. Speaking of the judgment of false teachers, the Holy Ghost gave reference to the fall of angels in the dateless past. These angels committed a particular sin. When Satan sinned, he took a vast number of angels with him in his rebellion. 2. These fallen angels or devils are found throughout the Bible and are found to cause the people of earth great grief. Many in the days of Christ were filled with devils that afflicted the people that they inhabited. One had such a multitude of devils that they went into 2000 swine. The Apostle Paul was buffeted with a messenger of Satan in 2 Corinthians 12:7. 3. The angels found in 2 Peter 2:4 are again mentioned in Jude 6. These angels “kept not their first estate but left their own habitation.” The words first estate refers to their origin and purpose. The angels are beings created for the worship of God in heaven and for the ice of doing His will. The words their habitation refers to the place of their dwelling, which was heaven. 4. As to precisely what their sin was is not given though there is much unbiblical speculation of fallen angels cohabiting with women in Genesis 6. This erroneous assumption has absolutely no basis in Scripture. The sons of God in Genesis 6 referred to the godly line of Seth intermarrying with the ungodly line of Cain. We do not know for sure what the sin of these angels was, but there are several things that can be learned from this verse. D. There are several things that I want to look at:1. There Is A Warning Involved a. The Warning Of The Destructiveness Of Sin 1) There Is The Wonder Of Wickedness – angels sin.2 There Is The Wonder Of Justice – God spared them not.3) There Is The Wonder Of Containment – He cast them down to hell.4) There Is The Wonder Of Judgment – they are reserved. b. The Warning Of The Deceivableness Of Sin1) They Sinned In Spite Of Their Position - Psalms 8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.Psalms 68:17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.2) They Sinned In Spite Of Their Possessions - Psalms 68:17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, eventhousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place. (You would think that they were satisfied.)3) They Sinned In Spite Of Their Power - Psalms 103:20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.4) They Sinned In Spite Of Their Purpose - Psalms 148:2 Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.5) They Sinned In Spite Of Their Place - Ezekiel 28:13-14 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.a) They Were Around The Right Crowd – (A perfect peer pressure)b) They Were Around The Right Circumstances – (A perfect place)c) They Purposefully Chose To Sin c. The Warning Of The Destruction Of Sin1) Lucifer (Light Bearer or Shining One) became Satan (Adversary or one who withstands)2) The Son of the Morning (Son Of The Early Light) became Apollyon (Destroyer)3) Their Blessing became Mischief.4) Their Wisdom became Cunning.5) Their Strength became Viciousness.2. There Is A Wrath Incurreda. The Judgment Of God Is Without Respect – “spared not the angels that sinned”Romans 2:1-11 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God? Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: For there is no respect of persons with God.b. The Judgment Of God Is Without Relief - “cast them down to hell”Luke 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.Mark 9:43-48 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.c. The Judgment Of God Is Without Reprieve – “reserved unto judgment”Revelation 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

We have now looked at the first step to a reprobate mind, Romans 1:21-22: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” False teachers began with the angels in heaven. (verse 4)B. We looked at the second step to a reprobate mind last week, Romans 1:25: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” We tied this verse with Noah's Day, as the sons of God rejected the old paths of their fathers and began to dishonor their bodies through adultery and fornication with the daughters of men.C. Tonight, I want to look at the third step to a reprobate mind, Romans 1:28: “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.” Though sodomy is not the result of a reprobate mine, it certain leads to one if not repented of.D. Sodomy in the five cities of the plains was a result of all three steps.1. Adam's Day was a pure day until the false teaching of the serpent beguiled Eve. I find not other problems with sinfulness.2. Noah's Day was characterized by the imaginations of evil minds. Luke 17:26-27 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. (27) They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.3. Lot's Day was an extension of Adam and Noah's Day. Luke 17:28-30 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; (29) But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. (30) Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.E. Notice both the similarities and progression of sin. Adam's Day was characterized by hard work and faithfulness, Noah's Day was characterized by sexual perversion. Lot's Day was characterized by idleness, fulness of bread, haughtiness, and abomination.Ezekiel 16:49-50 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. (50) And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.F. Sodom and Gomorrah were noted mainly for the sin of sodomy. We are faced with the same sinfulness in our society so I will make a few biblical statements and then move on.1. Sodomy is a sin, not an alternate lifestyle – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 2. Sodomy is a learned behavior, not an inherent one - Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.3. Sodomy is widespread both young and old - Genesis 19:4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:4. Sodomy is still an abomination in the sight of God - Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;5. Sodomy still brings about the judgment of God - Luke 17:28-30 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.a) God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sin - Genesis 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.b) God allowed the tribe of Benjamin to be destroyed because of sodomy - Judges 19:22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.1. Sodom's Sin.a. Idleness and Prosperity - Ezekiel 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.b. Unbridled Lust - Jude 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.c. Rejection of God - Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.2. Sodom's Curse.a. They Defile The Land - 1 Kings 14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.1) They were driven out of the land - 1 Kings 15:12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. (today they are exalting their lifestyle in America)1 Kings 22:46 And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land.2) They destroyed their houses - 2 Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove. (today they are allowing them to live together in peace)3) They were spiritually rejected - Deuteronomy 23:17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel. (today they are ordaining them)b. They Destroy The People- Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. (Aids)c. They Will Go To Hell - 1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,1 Timothy 1:9-10 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;3. Sodom's Cure.1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (Salvation cures the sin of sodomy. The sodomite is no longer a sodomite.)4. Sodom's Caution.Jude 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (God does and will always condemn and judge such sinfulness which will result in a reprobate mind.)

Our text ties angels with false teachers. The first false teacher was a serpent in the Garden of Eden. “Thou shalt not surely die!”F. There are several things that I want to look at:1. Whereas man is born into the world with a sin nature (they come forth out of the womb telling lies while still in a state of innocence), angels were created in perfection in a perfectly holy environment. 2) There Is The Warning Of Justice – God spared them not. To whom much is given, much is required! Their perfection and environment along with beholding the face of almighty God brought about much accountability.3) There Is The Warning Of Containment – God still controls! Though angels are free-moral agents, they can neither be forgiven nor redeemed. What they have written, they have written. Angels have a will to be exercised.Isaiah 14:13-14 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I willsit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: (14) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I willbe like the most High.4) There Is The Warning Of Judgment – they are reserved. They cannot escape the damnation of hell because hell was created specifically for them.Ezekiel 28:18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. (An interesting statement concerning the first sin and mention of its impending judgment. Was the flame of hell a result of Satan's sin?)Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: b.
