The plan would organize UMC churches in four global regions, with each given more leeway around same-sex marriage and other theological issues. The top legislative body of the United Methodist Church passed a series of measures Thursday to restructure the worldwide denomination to give each region greater equity in tailoring church life to its own customs and traditions. The primary measure, voted on as the UMC General Conference met at the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina, was an amendment to the church’s constitution to divide the denomination into four equal regions—Africa, Europe, the Philippines, and the United States.According to the plan, each region would be able to customize part of the denomination’s rulebook, the Book of Discipline, to fit local needs. While church regions in Africa, the Philippines, and Europe have already enjoyed some leeway in customizing church life, the United States has not.The vote on the constitutional amendment passed 586–164, or by 78 percent, which means it surpassed the two-thirds majority needed for constitutional amendments. It must now go before each smaller church region, called an annual conference, for ratification by the end of 2025.If ratified by two-thirds of delegates to the annual conferences, the restructuring would allow the four regions to set their own qualifications for ordaining clergy and lay leaders; publish their own hymnal and rituals, including rites for marriage; and establish its own judicial courts. A new Book of Discipline would have one section that could be revised and tailored for each of the four regional conferences. The two-week worldwide meeting is the first meeting of the General Conference in five years, due mostly to delays associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. It follows a painful schism that has split some 7,600 US-based churches from the denomination—a ...Continue reading...

China must stop supporting Russia's war in Ukraine if it wants to enjoy good relations with the West, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, warning Beijing in unusually harsh words it cannot have it both ways.During a visit to Berlin, the chief of the Western military alliance said Beijing's help was vital to Moscow's war effort as it was propping up Russia's war economy by sharing high-end technology like semiconductors."Last year, Russia imported 90% of its microelectronics from China, used to produce missiles, tanks and aircraft. China is also working to provide Russia with improved satellite capabilities and imaging," Stoltenberg said."China says it wants good relations with the West. At the same time, Beijing continues to fuel the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War Two. They cannot have it both ways," he warned.Stoltenberg cautioned Western allies against becoming as dependent on China as they had been on Russia."In the past, we made the mistake of becoming dependent on Russian oil and gas," he said."We must not repeat that mistake with China. Depending on its money, its raw materials, its technologies - dependencies make us vulnerable."China has strengthened trade and military ties with Russia in recent years as the United States and its allies imposed sanctions on both, but particularly Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine.China-Russian trade hit a record of $240.1 billion in 2023, up 26.3% from a year earlier, Chinese customs data shows. Chinese shipments to Russia jumped 46.9% in 2023 while imports from Russia rose 13%.Last month, Reuters reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to China in May for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, in what could be the first overseas trip of his new presidential term.
The Israeli government has requested a delay in the debate on the draft law and the response to the appeals on the issue, according to Israeli media on Thursday.? Member of Knesset Avigdor Liberman commented on the decision in a post on X. "Instead of internalizing the situation in which the State of Israel is, and the importance of service in the IDF, the government submitted another request to postpone the discussion on the conscription law.""I expect that the additional lagging out of a political consideration will be outrightly rejected by the Supreme Court," he added.? י, ידחה על ידי בית המשפט העליון על הסף.— אביגדור ליברמן (@AvigdorLiberman) April 25, 2024The Movement for Quality in Israel and Israel's Defensive Shield stated on response, "The government's request for a postponement is another blatant attempt to evade responsibility, and to ignore the Supreme Court ruling and the government's duty to enforce equal conscription ? Instead of acting without delay for equal recruitment, the government is once again trying to buy time to protect its political interests at the expense of those who do serve."Narrow political considerations must not be allowed to prevail over the good of the country and the rule of law. Every day of postponement damages national resilience and places a burden on those who serve. The time has come for yeshiva students to bear part of the burden, like every other young person in Israel. The petitioners ask the Supreme Court to reject this request, which has no grounds, and to rule in favor of justice and equality," the statement concluded. This is a developing story.
