The Apostle John picks up a pen in the last chapter of his life; he was commanded to do so. “Write the things which thou hast seen” (Rev.1:19), and he wrote, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life” (1John.1:1). I'd suppose after writing that, he got a larger scroll and wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John.1:1-3). John heard, saw, looked upon, and handled, Christ, which was from the beginning, God incarnate! He wrote a volume on Christology as it were. The Apostle John always wrote with clear outline and purpose, and his purpose is carefully spelled out as he writes his first epistle to the believer, his second as “the elder” to Israel, “the elect lady” of Revelation 12, and his third as “the elder” to his friend Gaius. To believers his stated purpose is “that ye also may have fellowship with us and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full” (1John.1:3-4). Noah Webster wrote “fellowship n. Companionship, Mutual association of persons on equal and friendly terms.” Jesus put it this way, “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: … I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one” (John.17:21,23). Fellowship, Selah!
