A genuine Christmas celebration ought certainly include a review of all the Bible verses that address Christ's first advent. It culminates when the resurrected Lord says, “39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. … 44 These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. … 46 Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day” (Lk.24:39, 44, 46). The “thus it is written” begins in Genesis wherein the promised “seed of the woman” would bruise Satan's head (Gen.3:15); it would come from Abraham and bless all the families of the earth (12:3); it would be covenanted through Isaac (17:9), and his father said to him “My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering” (22:8). That seed would “possess the gate of those which hate him” (24:60), would bless all the families of the earth through Jacob (28:14-16), and would be a lawgiver to gather the people in Shiloh, being the Lion of the tribe of Judah (49:10, Rev.5:5). His throne would be established forever (2Sam.7:16), but kings would gather against this virgin born (Isa.7:14) anointed one, the only begotten of God, (Ps.2:2,7) with attached names of God (Isa.9:6). As Jesus, Saviour, he died for our sin. (Isa.53:6,Jn.3:16-18). Acknowledge Bethlehem, shepherds and wise men in your Christmas worship, but also acknowledge the whole prophetic message attached to “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, … full of grace and truth” (Jn.1:14).
