Marriage is a gift given to us by our gracious God with the intent of reflecting the covenantal relationship between Christ and the church (Eph. 5:31-33). If we're being honest, though, marriage doesn't always feel like a gift. Sometimes, marriages reflect the pain and suffering of the world rather than God's goodness. If you feel your marriage is falling apart, I hope to offer you some ideas for getting back on track. The following ideas are too simplistic for marriages involving abuse. They are intended for those who are growing apart and need help to find their way back to one another.Photo Credit: ©iStock/Getty Images Plus/PeopleImages
We've all had the experience of attending a new church where we don't know anyone. It can be intimidating whether the church is small or large. You're the new person, and everyone seems to know each other and gravitate into groups before or after church, so you might just slip in and out on a Sunday morning unnoticed. Many people have done this for years and miss the joys of fellowshipping and serving with fellow believers. When I took a survey to see how churches might address the issue of overlooked people, few had any suggestions of what their church was doing beyond having friendly greeters. While the central purpose of attending church is to worship and hear the Word preached, it's also a means of connecting with other members of the church family. When people don't sense a welcoming atmosphere or feel overlooked, they'll usually leave. Some people even become adverse to church entirely because of a bad experience or a church that feels cliquey or unfriendly. Others will keep searching and hopefully ultimately realize they need to also make an effort to become connected.Let's look at how the church, and we as congregants, can recognize the overlooked people in our churches and help them feel welcome and valued.Photo Credit: ©iStock/Getty Images Plus/Keith Lance?
This world can often feel like a dark place. Sometimes it's hard to see light and hope in the midst of all the suffering and pain we see around us. Constant media headlines reveal the deep struggle, the pain, and brokenness so many have known.God's promises are true and He is faithful to bring them all to pass. Every single one. Jesus gives us eternal hope, rooted in Him, the promise of heaven, and the reminder that He will come again.Pastor and author Chuck Swindoll shares these known facts from the Bible:· One out of every 30 verses in the Bible mentions the subject of Christ's return or the end of time.· Of the 216 chapters in the New Testament, there are well over 300 references to the return of Christ.· 23 of the 27 New Testament books mention Christ's return.· In the Old Testament, such well-known and reliable men of God as Job, Moses, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, as well as most of the minor prophets mention Christ's return in their writings.Instead of fearing the end times, or battling uncertainty over future events, simply knowing God's word will give us power to live out our days with the understanding and wisdom that He is still at work, even when difficult things surround us.He hasn't lost control, not ever.Photo credit: ©GettyImages/thekopmylife? It was one of my favorite Jesus stories as a kid. Of course, I loved his teaching, the miracles, and the stories surrounding his death and resurrection, but when the Son of God goes into the Temple and starts flipping tables over and whipping the moneychangers, my young person brain perked up.? The story still fascinates me, but it has become more complex as I've learned more about the person of God through deep relationships in the Bible, and I've grown up a bit—a little.? To recap, in the days of Christ, the Temple had a different currency than the Roman coins. To give money to the Temple, required in some part by the Law, it must be with the Temple coin. The moneychangers set up shop in the outer court within the Temple itself to exchange the common Roman coin for Temple money. And these money changers made a profit, taking advantage of the people.? We may not have “moneychangers” in our modern churches, but we can take away important lessons from the actions of the Son of God.? Here are five things we can learn from Jesus flipping over the tables in the Temple.Photo Credit: ? Getty Images/gabrielabertolini
In 1986, seven astronauts went up into space on the space shuttle Challenger. Among those brave astronauts was Christa McAuliffe, the first female to enter space. I remember watching it in my elementary school classroom as the teacher wanted us all to witness history being made. I watched with excitement as I saw the space shuttle take off. However, I found myself confused just a few minutes later when all I saw on the screen was a billow of fire and smoke. Our teacher explained that there was an explosion. She then told us that all those astronauts, including Christa, had died. As a young girl, I was emotionally shaken by what I saw. I had never seen anything negative on television before. It was jarring to realize those men and women I had just seen a few minutes ago were no longer alive and made history but for a completely different reason. In the same way, your kids may be jarred by what they see on the news regarding the attacks in Israel. Finding the right words to comfort your child during these brutal attacks may be difficult. As parents, we can use this as an opportunity to explain to our children that God is still in control, regardless of the chaos we may see on television. Even when the world feels out of control, prayer is one of the most powerful weapons we can use to yield our lives and control over to God. Here are five prayers to pray with your children about the conflict in Israel:Photo credit: ©GettyImages/rudi_suardi
"Thou shalt arise and have mercy upon Zion, for the time to favor her, yea, the set time is come. For Thy servants take pleasure in her stones and favor the dust thereof. So the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord and all of the kings of the earth Thy glory. When the Lord shall build up Zion, He shall appear in His glory." Psalm 102:13-16People sometimes ask me, “Pastor, why do you keep going back to the land of Israel?” Because I love the land and I love her people. They are God's chosen people, a people of destiny. I go to Israel for two reasons. One, I love her past. I love to look back and see the land where my Savior lived and walked and talked. I love to study the Bible on location. It causes the Bible to burst aflame in your hands. Two, I want help in understanding the present and the future, because there is Bible prophecy yet to be fulfilled. Keep your eyes on Zion, God's holy land. As the Jew goes, so goes the world. The Jews are God's yardstick, God's outline, God's blueprint, for what He's up to in the rest of the world. The land of Israel, I believe, is the most important spot on earth. The most important city is not Washington or Moscow, but Jerusalem. The most important land, believe it or not, is not America but tiny Israel, about the size of New Jersey.Photo courtesy: ©GettyImages/silverjohn
