Msg#2520 Daniel and the 1st Advent
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
Daniel prophecies of the 2nd Advent, but necessarily of Christ’s 1st Advent; the Messiah’s coming in humiliation to die the untimely death of the cross. An “Advent”, by definition, is a long awaited, momentous, appearing. In 2:34 Daniel tells a king, “Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands …” Christ is this miraculously appearing Stone who will bring dominion over Gentile nations, but is first the virgin born smitten Rock of Horeb, crucified that the Spirit of life may flow from him to all who will drink. He is the Chief Cornerstone of the church, but the Stumbling Stone to the Jew; “Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?” (Mat.21:42).
In 3:25 that king said, “Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh” (1Tim.3:16). In 7:13 Daniel “saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, …” The 1st Advent’s virgin born Son of God is the Son of man.
In 8:25 a king of fierce countenance stands up against the “Prince of princes”. “Jesus, … Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour” (Acts.5:30-31).
In 9:26 “Messiah (shall) be cut off, but not for himself” … but for the “While we were yet sinners!”
In 10:5 Daniel “looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen”, that man was Jesus in his 1st Advent.
