Msg#2518 Utterance, Boldness, The Gospel
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
As Paul prepped the saints of Ephesus for spiritual warfare, he identified the enemies, the rulers of the darkness of the world, the spiritual wickedness in the high places; he assigned able armor, for loins, breastplate, feet, shield, helmet; and identified two assigned and able offensive weapons. We mention “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”, but often overlook the weapon. “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit” (Eph.6:17-18). The challenge for us to use of this latter weapon effectively is, “watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (vr.18), but Paul doesn’t stop there. Verse 19 concluding “and (pray) for me, that (#1) utterance may be given onto me, (#2) that I may open my mouth boldly, (#3) to make known the mystery of the gospel.” “Recall that after Truth and Righteousness are in place, the first preparation for spiritual warfare was, “feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” Note here that, Paul, a master at preaching the mystery of the gospel, asks for prayer for his utterance, and his boldness! How much the more do I need such ongoing prayer? How much more does your pastor? How much the more does your fellow church member?
Evangelist H. Boyd would ask us, “How long does it take you to have a ‘Sweet Hour of Prayer’? A week? A month? Praying over food three minutes per day, it would take 20 days to get in an hour!” David prayed seven times a day. Daniel, prayed openly, on his knees, facing Jerusalem, three times a day. Jesus, the Only Begotten Son of God prayed continually, often all night. Paul called out our two offensive weapons for the warfare of the Spirit filled believer. Let’s not let either get rusty.
