Msg #2504 Happy Valentine’s Day
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
The first and most intimate relationship for mankind on God’s green earth is the marriage relationship; so intimate that God parallels it to man’s relationship with his Creator. Understanding the parallel is key to having a home that is a taste of paradise on earth. Our world is replete with marriages that taste entirely different than that. To be ‘intimate’ is “to love entirely a familiar friend to whom thoughts are entrusted without reserve.” That captures the intimacy of the marriage relationship.
Love is three dimensional with body (physical), soul (emotional) and spirit (spiritual) each has depth in charity, significance and security; that would be nine measurable attributes of God’s love for you and of your love to your spouse. All nine are visible in verse, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlastinglife” (Jhn.3:16), “So ought men to love their wives” (Eph.5:28).
Men are made of dirt; “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet (appropriate) for him.” She is your appropriate physical helper, your appropriate mental-emotional helper, your appropriate spiritual helper. Imagine living a life where you are significant to no one, no one significant to you; imagine living a life insecure in your most intimate relationship. Imagine it, but don’t do it. The genesis of marriage concludes, “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed”; the genesis of sin opens “they knew that they were naked; … and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God” (Gen.2:25,3:7-8). Spring is just around the corner, get her a Valentine’s Day card, candy, and roses.
