To both Isaiah and Jeremiah God gives an abundance of justification for the judgment that is going to fall on the nation he loved and called his own. Both Israel and Judah were warned repeatedly of the consequence of their disobedience and rebellion, yet they provoked the LORD God to wrath. So too America. So too many a “Christian”.
In Jeremiah chapter 17 God says, “The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars” (vr.1). Christians can get like that: CARNAL. So established in a sin that it is graven upon the table of their heart. God says, “Whilst their children remember their altars and their groves by the green trees upon the high hills” (vr.2). Children can get like that: MISLEAD! What we allow in moderation our children will take in excess! The way we lean is the way our children will fall. God says, “For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited” (vr.6). Christians can get like that: PARCHED! NOT growing, murmuring, critical, criticizing. God says, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is” (vr.7). Christians can get like that: MATURING, growing in faith. “Hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God” (Ps.43:5). God says, “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings” (Jer.17:10). Christians can get like that: MOVING! cf.Prov.3:5-6.
