The Apostle John, writing the words of God, knew how to put precept upon precept and line upon line (Isa.28:13), and 1John 4 is but a reiteration of truth that John teaches to “my little children.” He adds insight about the “many antichrists; whereby we know it is the last time” (2: 18 ) “we are of God, little children, and have overcome them (antichrists): because greater is he that is in you, then he that is in the world” (4:4). Jesus warns the Jews of Jerusalem, NOT of an antichrist, but of the “abomination of desolation” which is to come in the 3½ year center of their great tribulation (Matt.24:15). The “christian” obsessed with finding “the Antichrist” has completely missed all that John writes here.
John reiterates that the perfect love of God is perceived in Calvary (3:16,4:10). He expands, “herein is love, not that we love God, but that he loved us” (4:8-10). And John reiterates “he that loveth his brother abideth in light, … he that hateth his brother is in darkness” (2:11), and “we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (3:16), with “we are also to love one another” (4:11). But that love is expanded in 4:17-19, “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he (Christ) is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: … He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us.”
God expertly adds line upon line, through the pen of his beloved apostle. With a little study, one finds each line drawn from Jesus’ teaching in the Gospel of John. It is a marvelous expansion of truth.
