Msg#2523 Mystery of the Gospel
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
Everyone loves a mystery; and the Bible announces twelve of them. A key text for all twelve is Matt.13:10-11: “Why speakest thou unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.” In scripture a mystery is a previously hidden truth, now divinely revealed. Despite the revelation, there remains a supernatural element that believers will grapple with; for example, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory” (1Tim.3:16). In Ephesians disciples get five pieces of armor and two weapons of warfare. Of the second weapon Paul says, pray“with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel” (Eph.6:18-19). Examine briefly “the mystery of the gospel:” “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him” (Heb.2:3); “Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow … which things the angels desire to look into” (1Pet.1:11,12); “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe” (1Cor.1:21);“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God … they are spiritually discerned” (1Cor.2:14).
