Msg#2522 The Davidic Covenant
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
Psalm 89, a poem of contemplation by Ethan, a native born son of the land, is a confirmation and exposition of the Davidic-Covenant. Ethan, Solomons, contender for the wisest of men, begins, “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever: with my mouth will I make known, they faithfulness to all generations.” Verse 3–4 describe the Davidic-Covenant framed in 2Samuel.7:16; it promises, the glorious kingdom of Christ, based on the seed of David, according to the flesh. It secures in posterity, the house and family of David, the royal authority of the throne of David, and the sphere of rule of his kingdom,… for ever! “And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD”. Versus 5–18 glorify Jehovah; “the heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fullness thereof, thou hast founded them” (Ps.89:11). Versus 19–37 God responds, “I have found David my servant: with my holy oil have I anointed him… And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him” (89:20,23). God concludes this affirmation, “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that has gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie onto David, his seed shall, endure forever, and his throne as the sun before me” (89:34–36).
Imagine the fate of a religion that would oppose such a covenant; the opposer of God who would set a kingdom in a Roman Vatican, or an Arab Spring or a Jihadist overthrow setting up a geo-political-world-religion instead, imagine, … and back away slowly. Ethan’s poem of contemplation closes with the Jewish remnants, dismay, and prayer for God to remember this covenant (vr.38-52). Romans 11:25–27 assures the church that God remembers his covenant well.
