Msg#2521 The Davidic Footprint
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
In reading 150 Psalms in 21 days I’ve learned that my puny footprints of passion are dwarfed by King David’s, and his are intent on imaging those of our Lord Jesus Christ’s. That gem makes such effort worthwhile. Noah Webster describes our passions as “The feeling of the mind, or the sensible effect of impression; excitement, perturbation or agitation of mind; as desire, fear, hope, joy, grief, love, hatred.” Every passion of man is found in the Psalms. Psalm 57, 58 and 59 describe “Michtam”, a prayer of David “when he fled from Saul in the cave” and “when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him.” These powerful Psalms of “Al-taschith” or “do not destroy!” prophetically capture passions of the King of kings. “ I will cry unto God most high; … He shall send from heaven, and save me from the reproach … They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: … O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. … For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: … Consume them in wrath, … and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth” (57:2-3,6, 59:1, 12,13).
Some of the things asked for by King David are far above our paygrade; like “Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth … As a snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away” (58:6,8). In fact they are often above David’s paygrade, befitting only to the coming King of kings. That is a befitting lesson for all the imprecatory psalms. My puny footprint can disappear in King David’s gargantuan one, and David’s is for portrayal of an even greater.
