Msg#2510 Wine and Abstinence
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
Contemporary Christianity conjectures that drinking booze is okay if you don’t get drunk, but there is not a syllable of that in the Holy Bible. A clear distinction is therein made between strong-drink and new-wine; and “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise” (Prov.20:1); whereas“new wine is found in the cluster”(Isa.65:8). So, as for strong-drink, Jesus never made it, never drank it, and never served it! Instead, he contended, “Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright” (Prov.23:31). Why? Because it brings “Woe, Sorrow, Contentions, Babbling, Wounds, Redness of Eyes, Tarrying Long, and Addiction.” It “Biteth like a serpent, Stingeth like an Adder” and “Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Further, you’ll do stupid-danger, stupid-situations, and be beaten, feeling it not, ending in stupper and hangover! (Prov.23:28-35). Check with Noah (Gen.10). Total abstinence is required for Priests (Lev.10:8-11), for Kings (Prov.31:4-5), and for those consecrated to God (Num,6:2-8), because they were not to be in the least “impaired” (1 beer, or 1 shot of whiskey is impairment mentally, 3 is DWI drunk). My drunkard neighbor could quote 1Tim.5:23 verbatim, don’t even go there.
“And as they were eating, (at the Feast of Unleavened-Bread) Jesus took bread (Unleavened-Bread), and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body” (Mat.26:26-29). Leaven is in type, in symbol, and in parable equated to Sin! Leaven is a yeast that causes fermentation in dough, or wine, the bubbles make bread rise, wine to “move itself aright.” Don’t pretend Jesus used strong-drink to represent his incorruptible blood. Abstinence is absolutely Biblical.
