What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

Armed with thirty-six books of the Old Testament Scripture the wise men who came to Christ's birth, as recorded by Matthew, knew more than many give them credit for. They knew the birth of the King of the Jews was immanent (Daniel 7). They knew he was to be the Son of God (Psalm 2), and worthy of their worshiped (Matthew 2:2). They knew to worship no other God and not to bow to any graven image (Exodus 20:3-4), and they bowed to the Christ child and worshiped him (Matt 2:11). They knew the child was to be called “the Mighty God”, “the Everlasting Father” (Isaiah 9:6). They knew of a supernatural star that eventually pointed out the house where the Christ child was found (Matt 2:9). Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars crisscrossing like a beacon is a natural occurrence, and never points out a specific house. The wise men knew Christ's star was a supernatural sign just for them and they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. They knew that true worship involves sacrifice, time, bowing, reverence, and an offering. They knew the voice of God in a dream (2:12). I'd say the only thing they missed was that reference in Micah 5:2 about Bethlehem. The Bible says that God revealed a supernatural promise, that Abraham believed God, that God saw his faith, and “it was imputed to him for righteousness” (Rom 4). These wise men did no less, and you and I are required to do the same. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16-17) Merry Christmas!
