“Finally my brethren, rejoice in the Lord, … Beware of dogs” (Phil.3:1,2). The common practice of having more than one closing to a good message is introduced by Paul; with God's Word there is always much more that should be said. Paul is not preaching to the mail-man here, but rehearsing a powerful scripture of Isaiah exposing crooked, froward watchmen that arise in the last days. “His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain” (Isa.56:10,11). Paul had just commended Timothy and Epaphroditus back to the Philippians because they knew the “proof of them.” Solid men of God, like minded with Paul, were in dangerously short commodity. Isaiah 56 and God's 'dog-eat-dog' diatribe is aimed at Gentile believers. God fast forwards to our dispensation and gives instruction to the Gentile church. Don't suppose “Replacement theology”, … “Neither let the son of the stranger, that hath joined himself to the LORD, speak, saying, The LORD hath utterly separated me from his people” (vr.3), but rather marvel that your name is written down, “Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer” (vr.7). Doubtless we Gentiles live in the perilous times, where nineteen vile things are rampant (2Tim.3:1-5). Apostasy abounds in churches and in their pastors. Savvy men of God, rightly dividing the word of truth and knowing the times are in short supply and high demand. Appreciate and pray for what you got, and be very careful if you're in want for a true man of God. Many are.
