What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

Sunday, Missionary to Italy Rob Craig preached from Luke 5:1-11. Curious that people pressed upon our Lord Jesus Christ to hear the word of God; would God people did today. Half the miracles of Jesus were done on or around this 14x7 mile, hundred foot deep lake and we start this account with two ships standing by, and the fishermen gone out of them. Be careful; during this pandemic fringe Christians quit going to church altogether, and others are slow to “Go.” Pandemic no-gos produce salvation no-shows. Jesus got into a ship and prayed Simon to thrust out a little from the land. Complacent Peter with all his fishing gear and skill had toiled all night,... without the Lord in his ship, he had taken nothing. Now this Carpenter, after teaching people out of Pete's fishing boat, was telling this seasoned fisherman to launch out into the deep, and let down his nets (plural). Simon stubbornly balked, he was discouraged, he had quit, he had tried this already, but “nevertheless” he gave some partial obedience and let down “a net” (singular). Peter was astonished at what God could do with his reluctant net. “And so was also James and John, the sons of Zebedee” (Luke 5:10). Sometimes we sing “Bring them in, Bring them in” as if people need brought into a church to be saved, but the commission that you, individual believer, have been given in Matthew 29:19, Mark 16:15, Luke 24:46, John 20,21 and Acts 1:8 is to GO! It isn't “Go, unless there is a pandemic!” When is the last time you invited someone to Christ? Or went through seven memorized verses of the Romans Road with a lost person? Get as astonished as Peter; launch out into the deep, drop down a net.
