Temple Baptist Church - 5-6-20182 Peter 2:9-10Introduction: A. Tonight, I want to look at verses 9-10. Lot taught us several lessons:1. You are either lost or saved! There is no middle ground: no purgatory, no limbo, no soul sleep.a) To die saved is to be present with the Lord - 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (7) (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) (8) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.b) To die lost is to be present in hell - Luke 16:22-23 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; (23) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.2. Salvation is not some unbiblical mixture of works and grace. Lot is a great example of the love and longsuffering of God as he had no good works mentioned either before or after he believed.3. The saved are delivered while the unsaved are reserved. The saved are delivered from hell while the unsaved are reserved for hell.4. The love of God and the wrath of God. In these two polar opposites, we find equality. The love of God and the hatred of God are equal!a) The Love of God - John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. b) The Wrath Of God - Revelation 6:16 And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb Revelation 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: B. Hell is a reality, not a state of mind or just separation from God. When speaking of the false prophets and angels who sinned, the Bible gives a vivid description of eternal damnation. Hell is a literal place of fire and brimstone. Hell is the unleashed wrath of a holy God. Hell is Hell!C. There are many words in chapter 2 that give a vivid picture of hell. Hell is a reality and not a state of mind. 1. Vs. 1 - Destruction2. Vs. 3 - Damnation3. Vs. 4 – Darkness4. Vs. 6 – Fire5. Vs. 9 - Punishment6. Vs. 9 – Judgment7. Vs. 14 – Cursed8. Vs. 17 – Mist of darkness9. Vs. 17 – Eternally preservedD. The Holy Spirit used the word “reserved” to describe the present state of the lost. We are familiar with the word “reserved” as we use it often. 1. When traveling, we call ahead of time and reserve a hotel room. The hotel room is ours days, weeks, months, and even years at a time. 2. With the eternal reservation of the lost goes a present privilege, one can change their mind and cancel within a certain time while occurring no loss.3. But, most cancelation policies have a time limit on how long that you can wait before having to pay the price of the reservation.4. Salvation is no different. Many falsely teach that everyone can get saved up until the time of death, but the Bible teaches different. God can give the sinner over to a reprobate mind and then the future reservation is “set in stone!”E. I want this message to biblically answer some questions about hell.1. Hell's Creation - Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:Ezekiel 28:18 Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffic; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. (Though I would never try to build a doctrinal truth upon this foundation, I do find it of interest that the first judgement pronounced was a “fire from the midst” of Lucifer.” I will go no farther on this verse because speculation always leads to misinformation and misinformation to false doctrine.)2. Man's Three Reactions To Hell.a. His first reaction is to deny it.b. His second reaction is to extinguish it.c. His third reaction is to ignore it.3. Hell's Residents.1. The devil and his angels - Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 2. The beast and false prophet - Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.3. The unbeliever - Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.4. Hell's Description.a. A place of punishment - Matthew 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.b. A place of banishment - 2 Thessalonians 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;c. A place of fire - Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.Mark 9:44-48 repeats five times, “the fire is not quenched.”Revelation 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.d. A place of consciousness and feeling - Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.e. A place of torment - Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.f A place of thirst - Luke 16:24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.g. A place of darkness - 2 Peter 2:17 These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.Jude 13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.h. A place without hope of escape - Luke 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.i. A place of unfulfilled desires and unanswered prayers - Luke 16:27-31 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: (28) For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. (29) Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. (30) And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. (31) And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.k. A place of remorse - Luke 16:27-28 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: (28) For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.j. A place of wailing and gnashing of teeth - Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.4. Hell's Reward.a. Hell is the eternal reward for rebellion against God - Nahum 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit thewicked.b. Hell is the eternal reward for rejection of Jesus Christ - John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.c. Hell is the eternal reward for wicked works - Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Temple Baptist Church - 4-4-20182 Peter 2:1-9Introduction: A. Last week, we began a contextual look at “their pernicious ways” and why the “many shall follow them.” I stand amazed, though I know what the Bible says about the “falling away” of the last days. To fall away from something, you must first have stood there.B. We looked at the angels that sinned in heaven because of Lucifer's rejection of God and their loss of their first estate. Then, Satan used a serpent to attack God's Word and beguile not only the serpent but also Eve. The first step toward a reprobate mind is that “when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God” and became unthankful.C. In verse 5, Peter gives our second example of false teachers and those who follow them. Noah's day! Genesis, chapter 4-6. Let us tie this verse with the second step to a reprobate mind in Romans, chapter. Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.D. How did they change the truth of God into a lie in Noah's day?1. Genesis 4, Cain, without any outside influence humanly speaking, heard and rejected the truth of God's Word. “If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?” tells us that he knew and understood truth. The only answer that I have is that the satanic influence that beguiled Eve beguiled Cain!Genesis 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.2. Cain was a grown man before Seth was born and the ungodly lineage in chapter 4 was in full swing. God had separated Cain from the godly line.Genesis 4:16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.3. Adam lived until Lamech was 56 years old. Methuselah was 243 years old when Adam died so Adam died 726 years before the flood. I personally calculated this for a reason: During Adam's life, he watched as the two lines, Seth and Cain, were separated by God—these two lines began to mix and mingle.E. In Genesis, chapter 6, we find:1. The multiplication of the ungodly line of Cain.Genesis 6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, (The rejection of God and His truth was in full swing in the days of Noah.)2. The rejection of truth by the Messianic line of Seth.Genesis 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.3. The wickedness of both the Messianic line of Seth and the ungodly line of Cain.Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.4. The few who embraced truth verses the many who rejected truth.Genesis 6:8-9 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. (9) These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.F. The truth of God had been turned into a lie. Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.G. I said all of this because, behind all of the sinfulness of Noah's day, lies the false prophets and teachers who influence both the saved and lost to reject truth and follow the ways of the world.1. They Rejected The Paths Of Their Fathers. Genesis 5:22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:2. They Rejected God's Command Of Distinction – Genesis 6:2 “sons of God . . . daughters of men” 2 Corinthians 6: 14-18 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.3. They Rejected God's Morality – Genesis 6:5 “wickedness . . . evil continually”Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.4. They Rejected God's Structure For The Family – Genesis 6:2 “they took . . . all which they chose”Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.Genesis 4:19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark.5. They Rejected God's Companionship – Genesis 6:9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.6. They Rejected God's Offer Of Grace - Genesis 7:9-10 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah. (10) And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. (God left the door of the Ark open for seven days, the number of completion, and anyone could have changed their minds and gotten on board.)7. They Reaped God's Judgement - Genesis 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.Genesis 7:21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:

We have now looked at the first step to a reprobate mind, Romans 1:21-22: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” False teachers began with the angels in heaven. (verse 4)B. We looked at the second step to a reprobate mind last week, Romans 1:25: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.” We tied this verse with Noah's Day, as the sons of God rejected the old paths of their fathers and began to dishonor their bodies through adultery and fornication with the daughters of men.C. Tonight, I want to look at the third step to a reprobate mind, Romans 1:28: “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.” Though sodomy is not the result of a reprobate mine, it certain leads to one if not repented of.D. Sodomy in the five cities of the plains was a result of all three steps.1. Adam's Day was a pure day until the false teaching of the serpent beguiled Eve. I find not other problems with sinfulness.2. Noah's Day was characterized by the imaginations of evil minds. Luke 17:26-27 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. (27) They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.3. Lot's Day was an extension of Adam and Noah's Day. Luke 17:28-30 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; (29) But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. (30) Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.E. Notice both the similarities and progression of sin. Adam's Day was characterized by hard work and faithfulness, Noah's Day was characterized by sexual perversion. Lot's Day was characterized by idleness, fulness of bread, haughtiness, and abomination.Ezekiel 16:49-50 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. (50) And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.F. Sodom and Gomorrah were noted mainly for the sin of sodomy. We are faced with the same sinfulness in our society so I will make a few biblical statements and then move on.1. Sodomy is a sin, not an alternate lifestyle – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 2. Sodomy is a learned behavior, not an inherent one - Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.3. Sodomy is widespread both young and old - Genesis 19:4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:4. Sodomy is still an abomination in the sight of God - Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.Genesis 13:13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.Genesis 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;5. Sodomy still brings about the judgment of God - Luke 17:28-30 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.a) God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sin - Genesis 19:5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.b) God allowed the tribe of Benjamin to be destroyed because of sodomy - Judges 19:22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.1. Sodom's Sin.a. Idleness and Prosperity - Ezekiel 16:49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.b. Unbridled Lust - Jude 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.c. Rejection of God - Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.2. Sodom's Curse.a. They Defile The Land - 1 Kings 14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.1) They were driven out of the land - 1 Kings 15:12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. (today they are exalting their lifestyle in America)1 Kings 22:46 And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land.2) They destroyed their houses - 2 Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove. (today they are allowing them to live together in peace)3) They were spiritually rejected - Deuteronomy 23:17 There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel. (today they are ordaining them)b. They Destroy The People- Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. (Aids)c. They Will Go To Hell - 1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,1 Timothy 1:9-10 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;3. Sodom's Cure.1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. (Salvation cures the sin of sodomy. The sodomite is no longer a sodomite.)4. Sodom's Caution.Jude 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (God does and will always condemn and judge such sinfulness which will result in a reprobate mind.)
