When We Love God, He Gives Us Love for Others In writing to one of his converts, Gaius, John commended him for many things. First, John was pleased that Gaius knew the truth. If we are to be true to God, we must know the truth. In our day with so many tools available to us, there is no reason for any Christian in America to be ignorant of the Word of God. It is vital for our spiritual growth that we read, study, memorize, and meditate on the Bible. It is sad to say, but many who know the truth do not practice the truth. John commended Gaius, not only for knowing the truth, but also for walking in the truth. “For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 3–4).We who know the truth must be careful to practice that which we know. One of the saddest things to witness is the horrible sins of people who know the truth. Biblical knowledge is important, but it is of no profit if it is not practiced.John also commended Gaius for his care for missionaries. “Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles” (3 John 5–7).Gaius had extended hospitality toward the itinerant evangelist/missionaries who had ministered in his church. John pointed out that these missionaries labored “for his name's sake.” They had one driving motive for serving the Lord—the name of Jesus Christ. I have often been asked, “Did you love the Japanese people when you went to Japan?” The fact is that I did not know any Japanese people when we went to Japan. Missionaries do not go to the unevangelized people because they love the people. They go because they love the Lord. After we began to minister to the people of Japan, God gave us a great love for the Japanese people which abides to this day. The faithful missionary does not have an ulterior motive. His or her motivation is the love of the Lord. “For the love of Christ constraineth us…” (2 Corinthians 5:14).John said those missionaries labored while “taking nothing from the Gentiles.” In other words, they purposely made themselves dependent on God's people. One of the most difficult things in missionary life is to be recipients of the goodness of others. But this is God's plan for missions. It has been my joy for the past forty years to visit missionaries all around the world. I have watched as God knit the hearts of missionaries with the people with whom they were working. As a result, missionaries and their churches have cared for widows and established homes for orphaned and abandoned children. Through the years, missionaries serving with Baptist International Missions, Inc. have been used of God to provide for those who could not help themselves. This is the pure religion of which James 1:27 speaks, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” Wherever there is biblical missions, you will see Christians practicing pure religion.Bill and Terry Craig went to Japan as missionaries in the mid ‘70s. They had two daughters, but their third child was stillborn. When they were told they could not have any more biological children, they began to explore the possibility of adoption. Within a few years, they had adopted three children. They now have twenty-one adopted Japanese children. What God has done for and through the children adopted by the Craigs is amazing. These young people are now pastors, missionaries, business people and godly examples of Christians. That is pure religion. The last time my wife Virginia and I were in Japan, we had lunch with Bill and Terry and two new children they had recently adopted.Missionaries with a passion to evangelize the lost and to establish independent Baptist churches have also seen the need to minister to the physical needs of the people to whom they are ministering. Our son, Tim, and his wife Donna adopted an abandoned Indian girl in Bolivia. They started homes for boys and girls in Bolivia that, as of last month, care for 150 sweet children. In Romania, Ed and Carole Hembree were greatly used to start churches and train leaders in that needy country, and they also started a home for homeless children. In Uganda, missionaries have been used of God to start churches and to train workers for God's kingdom, and they have a very successful ministry to orphans in different parts of the country.A person with a tender heart cannot see the physical suffering of others and turn a deaf ear to their cries for help. I am proud to be associated with godly missionaries around the world who—by their godly lives and their benevolent spirit—have been the hands, the feet and the heart of their Saviour to those in need. This is “Pure Religion.”
Temple Baptist Church - 5-5-2019Acts 2:41-47; Matthew 28:18-20Introduction: A. Most local churches and denominations have become confused as to their purpose for existence. 1. A preacher from the 1800's was quoted: “A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats.”2. To show the ignorance of church going people, they commonly say that it does not matter where you go to church if you go somewhere.B. The modern-day churches are doing this very thing.a. They have become social clubs. Where the elite of society join to be seen and promote their careers. Notice how few doctors, teachers, lawyers, business men, and politicians join true New Testament churches.b. They have become entertainment centers. Their programs and music reflect the mood and priorities of the world.c. They have become safe havens for the sinful. Sinners, both lost and saved, are not being confronted with their sin and, therefore, continue in them.d. They have become banks where the tithes and offerings of the saints now rest in bank (or personal) accounts. God never intended for money to remain in the bank while a world is dying without Christ and missionaries are struggling to get to the field.e. The have become more worldly and less godly. There was a time when the church was a place for the rich to show off their elegance in clothing fashions but now it is the reverse. Today, the church has become a place where people wear their casual clothing along with sandals and flip-flops.C. I find no Martyr's Roll containing the names of church entertainers. Men of God were put to death for not bowing or bending to the whims of society. They were not politically correct! They died for the Word of God!2 Timothy 3:10-13 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, (11) Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. (12) Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. (13) But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.D. What is the purpose of the local church? This morning, we read the First Mention of the local church in operation. The Lord had previously mentioned church discipline the Book of Matthew but it is in Acts, chapter 2, that we find the assembly and its work.1. Evangelization – Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. (Peter had preached Christ publicly in this chapter and thousands turned to Christ.)Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in allJudaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (In our Lord's command of evangelization, He mentioned both home and foreign missions.)Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Go ye, teach, baptize. We must go, they must hear and believe, then they are baptized.)2. Education – Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine.Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (The importance of sound doctrine is found in “all things.”)1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 3. Exhortation – Acts 2:42, 46 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers … andbreaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (The exhortation of God's people.)2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (The exhortation of God's Word.)Hebrews 13:22 And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.4. Unification – Acts 2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.Ephesians 4:13-14 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: (14) That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (The Scriptural education that only the Bible brings.)5. Supplication - Acts 2:42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. Isaiah 56:7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. Matthew 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.6. Adoration – Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. (Giving praise to He, who alone is worthy: our Lord Jesus Christ.)Psalms 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
Temple Baptist Church - 6-30-2019Romans 15:30-32Introduction:A. When I think of the Apostle Paul, I think of possible the greatest Christian, Apostle, and Missionary of the New Testament. I do not want to spend a lot of time tonight talking about all the biblical accolades given to him as that is not my message.B. He is writing to a church that he did not start and to a people he had never met. He has a prayer request. “Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me.”C. We hear missionaries say that the greatest thing we can do for them is to pray for them. I believe that they are entirely sincere in their askance.D. Paul said for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit. Our greatest obligation to God's men is intercessory prayer.E. If we are to strive in prayer (that means to pray regularly and diligently) for men that we do not know, how much more important is it for prayer to be made for our pastor! Does that sound selfish to you? It is not!F. How to pray for God's man? 1 Thessalonians 5:25 Brethren, pray for us!1. Pray for His Protection. If Satan can take down a shepherd of God's people, the odds are much higher that God's people will scatter. That they'll become bitter and disenfranchised. They will question everything they've ever been taught by that pastor. Satan targets pastors because the damage is exponential if they fall. Pray for your pastor that he would be kept safe from Satan.2. Pray for His Family. When Satan and wicked men cannot get to the pastor, they will attack his family. As goes his family, so goes the pastor.3. Pray for His Encouragement. The attrition rate in the ministry is great. So many more men of God are quitting than are answering the call to the ministry. More missionaries are leaving the mission field than are going. Discouragement is the most common cause of defeat.4. Pray for His Purity. Pastors are just men with a divine call. They are subject to like passions such as you have, and Satan will make sure that temptation is placed in front of them.5. Pray for His Physical Well-Being. I know that a pastor only works a 3 hour week, but he needs to be able to work 4 when needed. 😊 When he fails physically, it affects every other part of his life.6. Pray for His Wisdom and Spiritual Discernment. A pastor will have to make a lot of decisions and make spiritual judgments that are consistent with the Bible.7. Pray for His Study. Study and Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth are foundational for Bible teaching and preaching. There are so many easy ways to get sermon outlines in these high tech days but there is no substitute for personal Bible study.8. Pray for His Boldness. Ephesians 6:19-20 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, (20) For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Marvin and Becky Robertson are missionaries sent out of Eastland Baptist Church to the field of Spain.  They have faithfully served on the foreign field for over 30 years and have done a tremendous job.  It was a joy to have them home on furlough over the winter; our church family dearly loves them.
