Temple Baptist Church - 6-30-2019Romans 15:30-32Introduction:A.¬ When I think of the Apostle Paul,¬ I think of possible the greatest Christian, Apostle, and Missionary of the New Testament.¬ I do not want to spend a lot of time tonight talking about all the biblical accolades given to him as that is not my message.B.¬ He is writing to a¬ church that he did not start and to a people he had never met.¬ He has a prayer request.¬ ¬ ‚ÄúNow I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in¬ your¬ prayers to God for me.‚ÄĚC.¬ We hear missionaries¬ say that the greatest thing we can do for them is to pray for them.¬ I believe that they are entirely sincere in their askance.D.¬ Paul said for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake,¬ and for the love of the Spirit.¬ Our greatest obligation to God's men is intercessory prayer.E.¬ If we are to strive in prayer¬ (that means to pray regularly and diligently) for men that we do not know, how much more important is it for prayer to be made for our pastor!¬ Does that sound selfish to you?¬ It is not!F.¬ How to pray for God's man?¬ 1 Thessalonians 5:25¬ Brethren, pray for us!1.¬ Pray for His Protection.¬ If Satan can take down a shepherd of God's people, the odds are much higher that God's people will scatter. That they'll become bitter and disenfranchised. They will question everything they've ever been taught by that pastor. Satan targets pastors because the damage is¬ exponential¬ if they fall.¬ Pray for your pastor that he would be kept safe from Satan.2.¬ Pray for His Family.¬ ¬ When Satan and wicked men cannot get to the pastor, they will attack his family.¬ As goes his family, so goes the pastor.3.¬ Pray for His Encouragement.¬ ¬ The attrition rate in the ministry is great.¬ So many more men of God are quitting than are answering the call to the ministry.¬ More missionaries are leaving the mission field than are going.¬ Discouragement is the most common cause of defeat.4.¬ Pray for His Purity.¬ ¬ Pastors are just men with a divine call.¬ They are subject to like passions such as you have, and Satan will make sure that temptation is placed in front of them.5.¬ Pray for His Physical Well-Being.¬ ¬ I know that a pastor only works a 3 hour week, but he needs to be able to work 4 when needed.¬ ūüėä¬ When he fails physically, it affects every other part of his life.6.¬ Pray for His Wisdom and Spiritual Discernment.¬ ¬ A pastor will have to make a lot of decisions and make spiritual judgments that are consistent with the Bible.7.¬ Pray for His Study.¬ ¬ Study and Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth are foundational for Bible teaching and preaching.¬ There are so many easy ways to get sermon outlines in these high tech days but there is no substitute for personal Bible study.8.¬ Pray for His Boldness.¬ ¬ Ephesians 6:19-20¬ And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, ¬ (20)¬ For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
Temple Baptist Church - 5-5-2019Acts 2:41-47; Matthew 28:18-20Introduction:¬ A.¬ Most local churches and denominations¬ have become confused as to their purpose for existence.¬ 1.¬ A preacher from the 1800's¬ was quoted: ‚ÄúA time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats.‚ÄĚ2.¬ To show the ignorance¬ of church going people, they commonly say that it does not matter where you go to church if you go somewhere.B.¬ The modern-day churches are doing this very thing.a.¬ They have become social clubs.¬ ¬ Where the elite of society join to be seen and promote their careers.¬ Notice how few doctors, teachers, lawyers, business men, and politicians join true New Testament churches.b.¬ They have become entertainment centers.¬ Their programs and music reflect the mood and priorities of the world.c.¬ They have become safe havens for the sinful.¬ ¬ Sinners, both lost and saved, are not being confronted with their sin and, therefore, continue in them.d.¬ They have become banks where the tithes and offerings of the saints now rest in bank (or personal) accounts.¬ God never intended for money to remain in the bank while a world is dying without Christ and missionaries are struggling to get to the field.e.¬ The have become more worldly and less godly.¬ ¬ There was a time when the church was a place for the rich to show off their elegance in clothing fashions but now it is the reverse.¬ Today, the church has become a place where people wear their casual clothing along with sandals and flip-flops.C.¬ I find no Martyr's Roll containing the names of church entertainers.¬ Men of God were put to death for not bowing or bending to the whims of society.¬ They were not politically correct!¬ They died for the Word of God!2 Timothy 3:10-13¬ But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, ¬ (11)¬ Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me. ¬ (12)¬ Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. ¬ (13)¬ But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.D.¬ What is the purpose of the local church?¬ ¬ This morning, we read the First Mention of the local church in operation.¬ The Lord had previously mentioned church discipline the Book of Matthew but it is in Acts, chapter 2, that we find the assembly and its work.1.¬ Evangelization¬ ‚Äď¬ Acts 2:41¬ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.¬ (Peter had preached Christ publicly in this chapter and thousands turned to Christ.)Acts 1:8¬ But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in¬ Jerusalem, and in allJudaea, and in¬ Samaria, and unto the¬ uttermost part of the earth.¬ ¬ (In our Lord's command of evangelization, He mentioned¬ both¬ home and foreign missions.)Matthew 28:18-20¬ And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.¬ Go ye therefore, and teach¬ all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:¬ Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.¬ ¬ (Go ye, teach, baptize.¬ We must go, they must hear and believe, then they are baptized.)2.¬ Education ‚Äď¬ Acts 2:42¬ And they continued¬ stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine.Matthew 28:18-20¬ And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.¬ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:¬ ¬ Teaching them to¬ observe¬ all things¬ whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.¬ ¬ (The importance of sound doctrine is found in ‚Äúall things.‚ÄĚ)1 Timothy 3:15¬ But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.¬ 3.¬ Exhortation ‚Äď¬ Acts 2:42, 46¬ ¬ And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and¬ in breaking of bread, and in prayers¬ ‚Ķ andbreaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart. ¬ Hebrews 10:25¬ Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.¬ ¬ (The exhortation¬ of God's people.)2 Timothy 4:2¬ Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.¬ ¬ (The exhortation of God's Word.)Hebrews 13:22¬ And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.4.¬ Unification ‚Äď Acts 2:46¬ ¬ And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart.Ephesians 4:13-14¬ Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: ¬ (14)¬ That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;¬ (The Scriptural education that only the Bible brings.)5.¬ Supplication -¬ Acts 2:42¬ ¬ And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread,¬ and in prayers. ¬ Isaiah 56:7¬ Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.¬ Matthew 21:13¬ And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.Acts 1:14¬ These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.6.¬ Adoration ‚Äď Acts 2:47¬ ¬ Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.¬ ¬ (Giving praise to He, who alone is worthy: our Lord Jesus Christ.)Psalms 103:1¬ Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
Temple Baptist Church - 2-10-2019Romans 12:3-8Introduction:A.¬ In our context,¬ Paul moves from personal sanctification to unity of purpose.¬ Here we find the importance of each member of the local church.¬ When our Lord went back to heaven, He gave the church gifts (the evangelist and pastor-teacher), and individual gifts.¬ B.¬ It amazes me when I see the talent level¬ of the people in the church.¬ Personal gifts of the Spirit to be used for the edification of the body and the ministry of the local church.¬ C.¬ In our verses for tonight, Paul describes some of the work-related gifts found in the church.¬ I am not going to do an in-depth study of the gifts of the Spirit but want to emphasize the importance of each member of the body.D.¬ ¬ The Bible gives an analogy¬ between the human body and the church body.¬ Our physical body is a work of divine genius that only a divine Creator could create.¬ David said that he was fearfully and wonderfully made.Psalms 139:14-16¬ I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. ¬ (15)¬ My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. ¬ (16)¬ Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.E.¬ Every part of our human body¬ has purpose and is essential to our well-being.¬ Every member of the local church has purpose and is essential to its well-being.F.¬ As every individual part¬ of our human body belongs to the whole, every member of the local church belongs to the whole and is essential to its edification and work.¬ ¬ NEVER THINK THAT THE CHURCH CAN DO WITHOUT YOU!1.¬ We share the same Salvation.2.¬ We share the same Lord.3.¬ We share the same Church.4.¬ We share the same Bible.5.¬ We share the same Love.6.¬ We share the same Blessed Hope.G.¬ Paul mentions seven specific parts¬ of the internal ministry of the local church in these verses.1.¬ Prophecy.¬ Verse 6.¬ Prophecy here means to forth-tell, not fore-tell.¬ In 1 Corinthians, we find its meaning:1 Corinthians 14:3¬ But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.¬ ¬ (Preaching that edifies, exhorts, and comforts the body of Christ.¬ (I once heard a man say that two things made him want to preach:¬ good preaching and bad preaching.¬ Good preaching builds up, presses the believer to continue, and comforts the troubled.)2.¬ Ministry.¬ Verse 7.¬ This word comes from the same root word as the word ‚Äúdeacon,‚ÄĚ which means servant or to serve.¬ Galatians 5:13¬ For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.3.¬ Teaching.¬ Verse 7.¬ Sunday School teachers are very important in the local church.¬ They have the awesome responsibility of breaking down God's Word to the level of their students.¬ The future of our children lies in their hands.2 Timothy 2:2¬ And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.4.¬ Exhorting.¬ Verse 8.¬ This word comes from a root word that is used for the Holy Spirit.¬ It means to come along side of or to implore someone who is faltering.Hebrews 10:2¬ For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.5.¬ Giving.¬ Verse 8.¬ Thank God for tithers and givers.¬ Without you, the church could not function, and missionaries would¬ NEVER¬ get to the field of their calling.¬ Let it be done with simplicity.¬ Simplicity ‚Äď folded together.¬ I always place our tithing envelope face down.¬ God knows and a few people are privy to that information, but it is NEVER discussed among those who do know.6.¬ Ruling.¬ Verse 8.¬ Ruling with diligence and compassion.¬ Not as lords over God's heritage but as shepherds over God's sheep.1 Timothy 5:17¬ Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.7. ¬ Mercy.¬ Verse 8.¬ Sharing with those in need.¬ Not just monetary but giving one's time and efforts to those who have need of it.¬ A burden shared is half a burden! Conclusion:¬ The work of the local church is diverse in nature.¬ It takes all of us to make the local church what it should and needs to be.
Marvin and Becky Robertson are missionaries sent out of Eastland Baptist Church to the field of Spain. √ā¬†They have faithfully served on the foreign field for over 30 years and have done a tremendous job. √ā¬†It was a joy to have them home on furlough over the winter; our church family dearly loves them.
