Msg #1846 A National Day of Thanksgiving

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan's Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

Give special thanks for being born in a country that has for the past hundred and fifty-five years observed a national day of thanksgiving, but in that thanksgiving prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator, and Sustainer of this world, plead for our country, “Because that when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened” (Rom 1:21 ). Our nation needs its foolish heart, and reprobate mind, enlightened by Christ. In his 1863 “Thanksgiving Proclamation” President Abraham Lincoln said it thus: “It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God; to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord. … We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; ... But we have forgotten God. ... and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. ... we have become ... too proud to pray to the God that made us.” Worse than forgetting God, we have actively tried to dismiss him and erase him and his Only Begotten Son from the minds of our children. (Song lyrics come to mind, “I don't believe in evolution I know creations true.. so praise the Lord for what he made, give credit where it's due...) Give thanks, and pray for revival of our nation. Happy Thanksgiving.
